Prejudice

1) What do I already know about prejudice?

I know that that prejudice is the unfair viewing of certain people because they are different from the majority. Prejudice can result in discrimination, abuse and other unfair treatment and usually results from stereotypes. Prejudice has proven disastrous in history, an example being the genocide of the Jews by Adolf Hitler. Prejudice is often untrue and does not apply to the whole group most of the time.

2) What do I want to know about prejudice?

I want to know why people prejudice against other people (why did the fair-skinned people view the darker skinned people as inferior?) and what exactly is considered as prejudice.

3) What have I learnt about prejudice?

Prejudice is the prejudgment of people, based on stereotypes and over-generalizations. For example, if one has an experience in which a teenager wearing earphones and listening to his music player was rude, he/she may over-generalize that all teenagers wearing earphones are rude and the next time he/she meets a teenager, he/she may pre-judge him to be rude, which would be prejudice. Prejudice requires two groups of people: the majority and the minority. The majority prejudice against the minority because the minority is different from them, resulting a the majority viewing the minority as inferior, usually also because a minor group in the minority display a certain behavior which corresponds with the majority's views.

Generalizations about prejudice:

1) It affects a person negatively on both physical and mental health.

2) Many people are prejudiced on others who are different from them.

3) It causes psychological problems for society and misleads people into misjudging others.

4) It is widespread and has caused unfair treatment.

5) Prejudice will always exist.
